Mono PERC vs Polycrystalline vs TOPCon: Which Panel is Best for Gujarat?

Jan 2026 Chidanand Engineering Team 3 min read

When you start researching solar panels for your home, you will immediately run into three major technical terms: Polycrystalline (the older blue panels), Mono PERC (the modern black panels), and TOPCon (the latest high‑efficiency technology).

Choosing the wrong panel technology can mean running out of roof space before you generate enough electricity to cover your GEB bill.

1. The Head-to-Head Comparison

Here is the simple breakdown of what these technologies mean for your wallet and your roof.

Polycrystalline

The Blue Panels (Budget)
  • Lower Efficiency: Takes up more roof space to generate the same amount of power.
  • Poor Low-Light Performance: Generation drops heavily on cloudy days or during monsoon.
  • Heat Sensitive: Loses efficiency in Surat's extreme peak summer heat.
  • Cheaper Upfront: Slightly lower initial cost.

Mono PERC (Half-Cut)

The Black Panels (Premium)
  • High Efficiency: Generates significantly more power in a smaller roof area.
  • Great Low-Light Performance: Generates power earlier in the morning and later in the evening.
  • Heat Resistant: Handles Gujarat's 40°C+ summers much better.
  • Modern Standard: Higher lifespan and better overall ROI.

2. What about TOPCon Technology?

You might have also heard about N-Type TOPCon panels. This is the absolute latest advancement in solar technology, taking the benefits of Mono PERC and making them even more efficient. TOPCon panels have almost zero degradation over their lifetime, meaning they will produce nearly as much power in year 20 as they do in year 1.

The Chidanand Solar Verdict

Because roof space is usually limited in residential areas in Surat, we strongly recommend Mono PERC (Half-Cut) or TOPCon panels. While Polycrystalline is slightly cheaper upfront, the long-term generation loss is not worth the minor savings. We exclusively use high-efficiency, Tier-1 Mono PERC and TOPCon panels for our clients.
